CHUCK
SMART February 10, 1941 - December 29, 2008
It is with much sadness that we inform you that our dear
friend, artist and musician Chuck Smart has passed on. He passed peacefully
with is wife Dawn and his brother Sydney at his side.
He had been
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After a short time with various
procedures, he made the decision to stop all treatments. He entered hospice
care on the Wednesday before Christmas. He was comfortable, received good care
and Dawn was at his side day and night.
He was an amazing light and a
creative spirit who always thought "outside the box," continually pushing
beyond the artistic norms of the time. He was known as an innovator and an
improviser, who highly valued collaboration with artistic peers and comrades
across all disciplines. He was both a teacher and an ongoing student of music,
art and life. Until his final breath, he never strayed from that path. He will
be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched.
On a happier, but
somewhat bittersweet note, we were notified on the same day that Chuck entered
hospice that his piece entitled "Life and Death" (shown above) has been
accepted for the 2009 CVG Show that will take place in February at Collective
Visions Gallery (collectivevisions.com) in downtown
Bremerton, Washington. It is one of 131 pieces that were selected for inclusion
in the show from a total of 843 pieces submitted by artists from across the
state.
As many of you may
remember, Chuck won Best in Show at the inaugural CVG Show in 2008.
